At Mile Zero of the Alaska Highway

This monument marks the beginning of the Alaska Highway in Dawson Creek, British Columbia. This photo of me was taken on the morning of July 9, 1990, on our way to Alaska.

It takes eight days to drive from San Francisco to Fairbanks: two days to reach the Canadian border, two more days to reach the beginning of the Alaska Highway, three more days on that highway to reach the Alaska state line, and one more day after that to reach Fairbanks. So the photo you see here not only marks the beginning of the Alaska Highway, but also the midpoint of our trip.
