"PSIP Channel" is the channel to which the signal is aliased.  A signal transmitted by the station causes that number to be used on viewers' sets.  Stations generally send their analog number as their PSIP channel so that viewers see the same channel number for both analog and digital stations.

"Analog Channel" is the channel on which the station has broadcast its old style (analog, or NTSC) signal. This channel must be vacated by February 17, 2009.

"Present Channel" is the digital channel number on which the station actually transmits at present.

"Post Trans. Channel" is the digital channel number the station will transmit on after the transition date of February 17, 2009.

Several active signals can be transmitted on one digital television channel.  To distinguish them, decimals or dashes are added after the channel number - for example 7.1, 7.2 and 7.3, or 7-1, 7-2 and 7-3.

Channels 2 through 13 are VHF.
Channels 14 through 69 are UHF.
VHF signals propagate more readily than UHF signals, so VHF stations transmit less power to cover the same area.
Actual frequencies of the various channels can be seen here.

Notes:
* = ERP shown is post transition, 2/17/09
# = Analog station will be on air until transition day, 2/17/09, and digital station is now operating on post transition facilities.  No changes are needed.
A = Antenna Sutro Tower - Station will operate on present temporary antenna until new antenna is ready in August, 2009.  During periods when antenna work is in progress, February through October, 2009, station will operate at reduced power from auxiliary antenna.
D - Station transmits 6am-5pm
H - Transmits in High Definition (HDTV)
N - Station transmits 5pm-6am
P - Planned subchannel - not yet on the air
r - Reruns earlier programs from main channel
T - See below for special transition information for this station
x - NTSC channel, on air with 15kw, limited reception range
Major San Francisco sites are in red.
Major Sacramento site is in green.

Google Earth Coverage Maps

Signal coverage maps have been uploaded to the AVS Forum web site for viewing with Google Earth. Individual packages are available for each metro area. One labeled "San Francisco" is available for the San Francisco-Sacramento-Salinas area and includes all of the stations listed on this page.

You need the latest version of Google Earth (4.0), and the Bit Torrent program to receive the package, but once you get it, the display is amazing. Using the colors of the rainbow, the signal coverage of each station is displayed.

Once you have the bit torrent file downloaded and it's added to your Google Earth "Places", expand the sub-folder for Tx Maps (click the '+' sign next to Tx Maps). You'll find the individual transmitter maps there to choose from. Just click on the circle to the left of a particular station to display it's coverage map.

The display takes into account the station's transmitter power, antenna pattern and height, propagation losses due to terrain and curvature of the Earth, and shows the expected signal strength near ground level.

The display does NOT take into account your antenna height and gain or amps used, nor does it account for multipath.

For details go here.

DIGITAL CHANNELS
AFTER ANALOG SHUTDOWN

Until February 17, 2009, both the new digital and older analog NTSC signals will be available. After that date, the TV band will shrink to include only channels 2-51. Below is a chart which culls out all the information to show the final configuration. Low Powered stations and translator stations are included in this list.

NOTES:
1. Analog shutdown will be on February 17, 2009.
2. Except for low power stations, purple channel number indicates final digital channel will be present analog channel, black channel number indicates final digital channel will be present digital channel, and blue channel number indicates final digital channel will a new one (neither of the foregoing).
3. Asterisk (*) with call sign indicates low power station. FCC approval of low power stations is on a later schedule than approval of standard power stations, and only stations whose applications have not conflicted with applications of others, and are thus tentatively approved, are now shown.

SPACING REQUIREMENTS

Channels 7-13:
Prohibited on same channel: 0-170 mi
Prohibited on adjacent channel: 14.29-68.35 mi

Channels 14-51:
Prohibited on same channel: 0-139 mi
Prohibited on adjacent channel: 14.91-68.35 mi
Note on spacing requirements:
The "doughnut" shaped exclusion zone for adjacent channels recognizes
that adjacent stations only present a problem when there is a strong
station right next to a weak station you want to watch.
