Once on the turntable, the crew spins the car around. Car 28 is now ready to roll down to pick up passengers as soon as car 11 departs. We're just about ready to get on board for our ride. On board the cable car on Powell Street crossing over another cable car line on California Street. - The cars are moved along at 9 mph by grabbing the moving cable in the center slot you see here. - The entire system is run from the central cable car bar where the engines are located. We're headed down Powell Street toward Union Square as another car starts its climb up the hill.
Autos have to use the single lane at the curb. They can't be driven in the center area on the hill. Our next trip is north to Marin County. Our first stop is the Marin Headlands - viewing area overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and the city of San Francisco. You get a fabulous view of the Golden Gate here. We're now at Muir Woods National Monument and its beautiful, tall redwood trees. A ranger tells visitors a little history about the national monument along with - information about the trees. Here you can see how huge the redwood trees are.
