Sonora Pass is the line between Mono County to the east and Tuolumne County
to the west. For some reason, the California Highway Department indicates the
height above sea level to be four feet lower than the National Forest sign.

The view looking east past the sign The view looking back to the west More history about Sonora Pass... and another height difference. I guess it all depends where you stand. The Pacific Crest Trail crosses the highway at the top of the pass. Here you see the trail going off into the woods.
Larry at the sign showing that we're about to enter the Toiyabe National Forest. It's time for a rollercoaster ride! A view of the mountains to the east in Nevada Note the different type of rock seen on this side of the pass.
