Comment on Same Sex Marriage

Mayor Gavin Newsom has claimed that it was his original idea to perform the marriages in San Francisco in 2004, an idea that he has said came to him shortly before the marriages began. Actually, I wrote this to San Francisco's largest newspaper, The Chronicle, which appeared in its letters to the editor on June 6, 1998, more than five years before Newsom's "idea". Therefore, the idea had by then been known in San Francisco for a long time:

ANIMAL FARM

Editor -- What a joy it is to live in San Francisco, where our local officials scrutinize every state and federal law and right every injustice! First it was the draft, and then the immigration laws, followed by needle swap programs, pot clubs and local educators who refuse to give state-mandated tests. Today I see retaining bilingual education will be next on the list. Surely when my same-sex partner of 21 years and I go down to get married, the local San Francisco official will grant us the license, state law notwithstanding. Or will we find out in this Animal Farm, that some in the barnyard are more equal than others?
